“Natural stone cladding” describes the visible material, not necessarily the whole product. Ask what holds the individual stones together and what surface the installation adhesive will actually bond to.
- Natural stone pieces and their approximate thickness range.
- Mesh type and the resin or bonding material used to attach it.
- Cementitious backing composition and surface condition, where applicable.
- Any embedded hook, rail, anchor or restraint component.
- Factory-applied coating, treatment or sealer.
- Corner-unit construction and whether it differs from straight panels.

4. Obtain a Clear Intended-Use Statement

A useful installation document should identify or require confirmation of:
- acceptable structural backgrounds and prohibited surfaces;
- surface preparation, curing, cleanliness and flatness;
- compatible primer and adhesive systems;
- adhesive application, full coverage and curing requirements;
- temporary support and working sequence;
- mechanical support or restraint where required;
- existing structural and movement-joint continuity;
- external corners, openings, terminations and top edges;
- weather, temperature and moisture restrictions; and
- inspection, maintenance and replacement arrangements.

6. Understand Declarations, CE and UKCA Marking
Where a construction product falls within the applicable regulatory route, request the relevant Declaration of Performance and marking information. Important: CE or UKCA marking is not a general quality badge and does not approve every proposed wall. Read the declared intended use and characteristics, then check whether the assembled panel and project fall within that scope.
7. Use BS EN 1469 Within Its Actual Scope
BS EN 1469:2015 specifies requirements for natural stone slabs used as internal and external cladding finishes. It addresses product characteristics, tolerances, conformity, marking and packaging.
Its scope does not cover installation and does not consider fixing by mortar or adhesives. A reference to BS EN 1469 therefore cannot, by itself, prove adhesive compatibility, substrate capacity, an adhesive-only height limit or whole-wall compliance.
8. Check Fire Evidence for the Assembled Product and End Use
Do not accept “stone is non-combustible” as the complete fire specification for a panel containing mesh, resin, backing, adhesive and fixings. Ask whether the stated classification covers the exact assembled product and how it was mounted and fixed during assessment.
The government's Approved Document B fire-safety guidance warns that reaction-to-fire performance depends on the tested system configuration. The field of application, substrate, orientation, joints, mounting and fixing method must be compared with the proposed end use.
Untested components should not inherit the classification of the visible stone. Fireplace, escape-route, relevant-building and other fire-sensitive projects require project-specific confirmation from competent parties.
9. Ask What Exterior and Durability Evidence Actually Covers
Water absorption, freeze-thaw resistance, strength or durability results may help assess the stone, but the report must identify the tested material, sampling method, test method and declared result. Check whether it covers the stone alone or the completed backed panel.
Exterior performance also depends on how water is kept out of vulnerable interfaces and allowed to drain. A material test cannot compensate for an uncapped wall, missing flashing, unsuitable substrate, incomplete bond, trapped water or an absent movement detail.
10. Verify Certificates and Test Reports
Before relying on a certificate, classification or laboratory report, check:
- Identity: does it name the exact product or a clearly defined product family?
- Issuer: which laboratory, certification body or manufacturer issued it?
- Method: which standard or assessment procedure was used?
- Specimen: what stone, backing, adhesive, substrate and fixing configuration was tested?
- Result: is a measured value or classification stated?
