Clay pavers are paving units manufactured from natural clay and fired at high temperatures to create a dense and durable product suitable for outdoor ground use. They are specifically designed for paving applications such as driveways, patios and pathways.

Unlike ordinary facing bricks used for walls, our slim clay brick pavers are newly manufactured and engineered specifically for paving. They are produced to meet higher performance requirements, including improved strength under load and better resistance to wear and abrasion.

In contrast, some products on the market are cut from reclaimed bricks or standard wall bricks, which are not originally designed for ground use. While they may appear similar, they do not offer the same consistency, strength or long-term performance as purpose-made clay pavers.

Our slim clay brick pavers are widely used for driveways, patios, garden paths and courtyards across the UK. Their strength and durability make them suitable for both pedestrian and light vehicular applications when installed correctly.

The long-term performance of clay paving depends on the full installation system, including a properly prepared sub-base, correct bedding layer and suitable edge restraints to support the paved area.

Clay pavers are known for their exceptional colour durability. The colour is formed during the high-temperature firing process and runs throughout the entire body of the paver, rather than being applied as a surface coating.

This means the colour will not fade in the way surface-treated materials can. Even under long-term outdoor exposure, clay pavers retain their original character and appearance, making them a reliable choice for projects requiring lasting visual consistency.

Clay pavers and concrete pavers are both commonly used for outdoor paving, but they differ in appearance and performance. Clay pavers offer natural colour, traditional character and long-term colour stability.

Concrete pavers are typically more uniform in size and often more cost-effective initially, but they may experience colour fading over time. The choice depends on design preference, budget and long-term expectations.

We do not recommend sealing clay pavers. Their natural durability and low water absorption allow them to perform reliably without any surface treatment.

Our slim clay brick pavers are designed to remain breathable and perform naturally in outdoor conditions. When wet, the surface may temporarily deepen in colour, which is a normal and desirable characteristic of natural clay. Once dry, the original appearance returns, offering an attractive finish in both wet and dry conditions.

With proper installation, including a well-prepared sub-base, our clay pavers can achieve a long service life of 30 to 50 years and are suitable for patios, pathways and light-use driveways.

A proper foundation is essential for clay paver installation. A compacted sub-base, typically using MOT Type 1 or similar material, provides structural support for the paved area.

Above the sub-base, a bedding layer of sharp sand is commonly used to level the surface before laying the pavers. The depth of both layers will vary depending on whether the area is for pedestrian use or driveway traffic.

Slim clay pavers are typically laid with small joints, often around 2–3 mm, to allow for proper installation and joint filling. Jointing sand is then brushed into the gaps to lock the pavers in place.

For our slim clay brick pavers, there is no need to deliberately measure or control joint widths. The units are designed to be laid closely together, following the pre-set guideline strings. By simply laying each paver tightly along the line, natural micro joints will form consistently without the need for manual spacing.

Common laying patterns include stretcher bond, herringbone and basket weave. The choice of pattern can affect both the appearance and structural performance, especially in driveway applications. For driveways, a herringbone pattern is generally recommended due to its superior interlock and load distribution.

Common installation mistakes include insufficient sub-base preparation, poor compaction, lack of edge restraints and uneven bedding layers. These issues can lead to movement or uneven surfaces over time.

Another frequently overlooked aspect is the use of proper alignment control. Setting up straight guideline strings along the laying direction is essential to maintain consistent lines and joint spacing. Without this, small positioning errors can accumulate as the work progresses, resulting in a visibly uneven or misaligned finish.

It is also important to mix pavers from different packs during installation to achieve a natural colour blend, and to ensure jointing sand is fully applied and compacted to stabilise the paving. For our slim clay brick pavers, this step is simplified. The packs are pre-mixed using a controlled blending process at source, so you do not need to select or mix units on site. Simply lay them in sequence as supplied to achieve a consistent and natural colour variation across the finished area.
