Description

Black basalt is one of the hardest and densest natural stones commonly used in outdoor paving. Formed from volcanic rock, it has a compact structure, high strength and excellent resistance to long-term surface wear, making it a strong choice for patios, pathways, driveways and traditional courtyard paving.

Compared with many softer natural stones, basalt is known for its very low porosity. Natural stone can generally be described as having low, medium or higher porosity depending on how open the internal structure is. Black basalt belongs to the tighter end of this range, which helps reduce water absorption and improves its ability to withstand repeated foot traffic, vehicle movement, weather exposure and general outdoor use.

A Dense Natural Stone for Long-Term Outdoor Paving

In the 200 x 100 format, black basalt setts are especially suitable for courtyard paving, driveway edging, entrance areas and hard-wearing garden surfaces. Once correctly laid on a suitable base, these small-format basalt stones can provide an exceptionally durable paved surface. Their slow weathering rate is one reason basalt setts are still widely seen in reclaimed stone yards across the UK, where pieces removed after decades of use often remain solid, serviceable and ready for reuse.

This long working life is one of the main advantages of black basalt. It is not simply chosen for its dark colour or smart appearance, but for its strength, density and long-term practicality. For projects where the aim is to lay once and avoid frequent replacement, black basalt paving offers a serious natural stone option with proven durability when installed correctly.
